A Few Words About The Club and The Area That We Operate In

The Mearns

Located on the North East of Scotland, to the south of Aberdeen, the Howe of the Mearns spreads from south of Stonehaven to above Brechin and from the Grampian Mountains until the Garvock Hill stops it from reaching the sea. Through this area the Romans came and are reported to have described "Mearnsmen, a troublesome and warlike race!"

The Mearns Camera Club takes its name from this now fertile and prosperous area although the bounds of our membership spread outside the definition of the area given above, stretching up almost to Aberdeen and south to Forfar, and with the sea playing a significant part in our lives and our photography. In fact, the picture on our home page is of Dunnotar Castle, an iconic fortress on its own promontory thrusting into the North Sea some 2 miles south of Stonehaven.

The Mearns Camera Club

The Mearns Camera Club is based in the Community Education Centre in Stonehaven. We meet every Monday evening from September until April at seven thirty (please refer to the syllabus for details). These sessions are a mixture of presentations from local expert photographers, competitions, coaching sessions and occasionally excursions for some practical, hands-on photography. During the summer, the Club members meet on a monthly basis for photography in the evening light.

We have started what we hope will be a annual series of lectures from the strongest names in photography, with local hero Niall Benvie from Brechin http://www.imagesfromtheedge.com/index.asp giving the inaugural presentation. We have subsequently hosted talks by Colin Prior and Mark Hamblin.

Competitions

The Club runs 6 internal competitions each year, with a mix of Open and specific theme subjects. All club competitions feature both slide and print sections.

In addition, we compete in the Grampian Cup against Deeside Photographic Society (in Aboyne), Aberdeen Camera Club, the Bon Accord Camera Club (in Aberdeen) and Peterhead Camera Club. We compete in the Angus Cup against Brechin Photographic Society, Carnoustie Camera Club and Carnoustie YMCA Photo Section.

The Club enters both the slide and print championships rum by the Scottish Photographic Federation and the Scottish Slide and Print Portfolios. Individual members compete in other competitions and salons as they arise.

Club Members

The Club has a strong membership ranging in skills from beginners to semi-professionals. The main theme of the work of the members tends to be landscapes, in which we include seascapes, skyscapes and cityscapes.

The Club welcomes members of any level of skill and does its best to support photographers of all standards.

Format

All of the Club slide competitions are run in 35mm format. Most members have 35mm cameras and some of us use medium format and digital cameras as well.

The Club has a range of equipment which members are able to book out or work at. These include:
